1
00:00:00,160 --> 00:00:00,800
Good evening.

2
00:00:00,800 --> 00:00:02,560
My name is Evan Hunt, and I'm proud to call

3
00:00:02,560 --> 00:00:04,400
McKinney my family's home.

4
00:00:04,400 --> 00:00:06,400
I'm a 20-year Air Force veteran who signed up
to

5
00:00:06,400 --> 00:00:08,560
serve after 9-11.

6
00:00:09,680 --> 00:00:13,360
I flew combat missions in Afghanistan, spent
years away from

7
00:00:13,360 --> 00:00:16,000
my family, risked my life and even killed in
our

8
00:00:16,000 --> 00:00:18,240
war against Islamic extremists.

9
00:00:18,240 --> 00:00:21,440
I recognize that there are valid concerns
about traffic and

10
00:00:21,440 --> 00:00:24,960
zoning, and I trust this city council to
carefully examine

11
00:00:25,040 --> 00:00:27,520
those issues and do what's best for our city.

12
00:00:27,520 --> 00:00:30,320
But I do not fear Muslim Americans in our
community

13
00:00:30,480 --> 00:00:34,960
who are overwhelmingly peace-loving, God-
fearing, and law-abiding.

14
00:00:34,960 --> 00:00:37,760
As for extremists, there are plenty of those
in every

15
00:00:37,760 --> 00:00:40,240
religion and every political faction.

16
00:00:40,240 --> 00:00:41,680
Here is what I know.

17
00:00:41,680 --> 00:00:44,160
What makes America the greatest country in the
world is

18
00:00:44,160 --> 00:00:44,800
freedom.

19
00:00:44,800 --> 00:00:47,120
The freedom to say what you want to say, to

20
00:00:47,120 --> 00:00:49,360
love who you want to love, to worship how you

21
00:00:49,360 --> 00:00:51,600
want to worship, and to be who you want to

22
00:00:51,600 --> 00:00:52,080
be.

23
00:00:52,080 --> 00:00:55,040
In honor of my great grandparents, I keep the
faith

24
00:00:55,040 --> 00:00:57,680
that our nation has always been strengthened
by people who

25
00:00:57,680 --> 00:01:00,720
come here, embrace our values, and become part
of the

26
00:01:00,720 --> 00:01:02,400
American story.

27
00:01:02,640 --> 00:01:06,160
Given the inflammatory rhetoric coming from
some of the highest

28
00:01:06,160 --> 00:01:09,200
officials in our state, I urge you to treat
all

29
00:01:09,200 --> 00:01:13,360
communities fairly and equally, in line with
our constitution and

30
00:01:13,360 --> 00:01:15,280
our commitment to religious freedom.

31
00:01:15,280 --> 00:01:19,760
The consistent application of these American
values keeps us all

32
00:01:19,760 --> 00:01:20,480
safe.

33
00:01:20,480 --> 00:01:23,520
Fear and prejudice have no place in public
policy or

34
00:01:23,520 --> 00:01:24,560
in Texas.

35
00:01:24,560 --> 00:01:26,320
This is not the American way.

36
00:01:26,320 --> 00:01:27,200
Thank you.

37
00:01:33,520 --> 00:01:34,000
Mr.

38
00:01:34,000 --> 00:01:35,760
Hunt, thank you for your service to our
